Summer Project – Slinkachu
On September 10, 2020 by Sophie MartynOver the summer I was asked by my college, to complete a set of photos which emulated an artist called Slinkachu. Slinkachu takes photos of mini figures in different positions.
When researching ideas for my emulation, I looked through a book called “Global Model Village, The International Street Art of Slinkachu”. This is a book full of photos from his “village” project. I found all the photos extremely fascinating and I wanted to make sure my emulation was close to his own work. Slinkachu views people as “little people” as stated in the context page in the book. With every close up of his photos, he takes a photo from afar to show the surroundings. In his book he travels to multiple different cities across the globe to take photos in different locations. He took these photos while on holidays and weekend getaways over a few years.
While reseaching his work, I came up with two different ideas. The first idea I thought of was to have a group of workers, I placed them in cracks in the walls. I also placed one figure in the sand looking at a wall of rocks. I wanted the model to be looking like they were about to break down the rock or the wall to get through or to make materials. I planned to take really close up with my micro camera lens so I could take photos closely to the figure with it in focus.
My second idea was to have a few monkey figures, I had placed them over rubbish with the background looking like a forest. I used a mustard packet for the rubbish. I then used a piece of lettuce to represent the forestry background. The meaning behind this idea was to represent that littering is ruining animals’ habitats and could be really dangerous for their heath. Especially if the rubbish is sharp or is toxic, this could harm their bodies and their digestive system if they try and eat the litter. Animals may not find food but they could find litter which was dumped by lazy people and this could look like food to them so they eat it and the plastic wrapper someone left will stay in their stomachs. This meaning they won’t eat enough food leading to them starving. I want to use the image to show that people need to be more careful with what they do with rubbish as it’s harming the environment.
