society, people, places – 6/10/2020
On October 6, 2020 by Sophie MartynI decided to take photos in Plymouth around the City Centre. As I live in Plymouth, I know what the day to day life is like. I also know how the community and the society treats people. I wanted to show how people act in plymouth. I took photos around lunch time around the city centre. I didn’t go to the mall due to it being private property. I took photos around the shops which are outside the mall. I walked down george street to and then looped round to walk back onto royal parade which is the main road in the Plymouth City Centre. I wanted to go at a busy time so I could capture people in the photos. I made sure that I didn’t get too close to people due to social distancing. I think that due to everyone wearing masks it was easier for me to take photos of people as their faces wouldn’t be fully in the photo. A lot of people were social distancing and queuing up to go into the shops so it was quite easy for me to get people in my photos due to this.
These are all the photo before editing –
I took a photo of a homeless man who was sitting on the floor and everyone was walking past him like he wasn’t there. The homeless man is positioned in the left third and the man standing up is in the right third. I think this does show that society is broken even in a town in the southwest which isn’t heavily populated. You could go to a tiny town anywhere someone will ignore people who are less fortunate. This could link back to when people cared about social class. People used to only speak to people in their social class. This made it hard for people who were of the lower – lower class to get jobs and money for food. I think this has influenced people in modern society. As mean as it sounds people may feel that homeless people have diseases and aren’t grateful for the money. People also don’t know what they are going to do with the money. But most likely if you sit and talk to homeless people they are normally very grateful for the money they receive. I am going to edit this photo to black and white and I am also going to enhance the brightness. This is because the photo is quite dark so I want to lighten it then turn it into black and white so the colours don’t distract you from what message i want to show in the image. I want to experiment with this photo with different edits. I do think this will work well in black and white.
The second photo I took was of a group of older ladies in brightly coloured coats sheltering from the rain. I feel like they are huddling close together because of how cold it is. They are in the left thirds. The colours stand outs because of how dull the shop fronts are. They look like they’re having a chat and socialising. I wanted to enhance the colour of the ladies coats. I am going to enhance the colour of the coats ad then darken the saturation of the back ground. I think this will help the colours look brighter because the background is darker. This could be seen as a glimpse from the past due to the new normal we are facing. the looks like they are having a nice lunch out without masks on or social distancing. This could also be compared to another photo I took of a lady who was wearing a mask.
This is the third/ last photo I chose. I took this photo as this lady was looking to cross the road. I took this photo quite quickly as she only quickly looked to cross the road. She is in the centre third. I wanted to make this black and white because of how busy the background is. I did want her to be closer to the camera. I was worried that the photo didn’t turn out how I wanted it too but I am very happy that it is in focus. The background is actually out of focus making the lady fully in focus. I think this is a true representation of what our new normal is like because the lady and the people in the background are wearing masks. I would compare this with the photo above because of how different they look.
