On October 20, 2020 by Sophie Martyn- ‘Zine’ is short for ‘Fanzine’.
Fanzine definition = A magazine, usually produced by amateurs, for fans of a particular performer, group, or form of entertainment. So a zine is an informal printed magazine with original, often niche content, with few copies made.
How are front covers important –
with the Title / logo, Main image, Focal point, Strap lines, Design elements, Use of colour and Complimentary typography
Typography – style or appearance of text, the art of working with text
most used fonts – serif, sans serif and display font
Magazine Cover Research Task: Choose 3 distinctly different magazine covers and analyse them using this presentation for guidance.
First magazine cover –
This is a Vogue Magazine front cover. Vogue is an American monthly fashion and lifestyle magazine covering many topics, including fashion, beauty, culture, living, and runway, based in New York City. they have the biggest artists for example lizzo to be on the front cover of their monthly magazine. This will attract lizzos fanbase to buy the magazine. They talk about fashion, their views on certain problems/ events which are happening around the world at the certain time. In this magazine they talk about lizzos plan for the future, her views on the election 2020 and justice. They state this on the front of the magazine. The vogue logo at the top of the magazine is in huge writing so it stands out. The main image is just lizzo underneath the vogue logo in a massive red dress. Meaning this is the main focal point of the magazine. They have writing around lizzo which looks like the writing if framing lizzo in the middle of the page. This design is very simple and the use of bright colours is only used on Lizzo to make sure the eyes draw straight to her. They do use a range of fonts and they’ve also made Lizzo’s name only a little bit smaller than the vogue logo.
Second magazine cover –
The Music Week is a magazine all about music. Music Week is essential reading for anybody involved in the music business. Every issue of this top weekly features all the latest news from the world of music, including details of who’s signed with what label, when, where and why. This is a trade paper for the UK record industry. It is published by Future. The title of the magazine isn’t that big compared to the artist’s name. The artist’s name/ Harry Style is in very bright colours and is the main thing the eye draws straight away. Then the picture behind is a very simple photo of Harry Styles which would draw in Harry’s fans and also people who are fans of music. They have a quote maybe from Harry but it does not state who it’s said by. The design is very simple and the majority of the writing is nearer the bottom.
The last magazine cover –
BBC Good Food is a global food media brand, with a monthly magazine which has a range of different recipes. This magazine talks about how to shrink your plastic waste, how to make a tiramisu, what wine to choose in restaurants and finally how to cook a chinese meal. This is a wide range of different how-to tasks. The design of the cover is very simple and there aren’t that bright colours. The target audience would be food lovers and chefs. The good food logo is the biggest writing on the page and it is a pink and purple colours which is then put around the whole page in different fonts. The main image is of american style fluffy pancakes. The colours of the font around the page just link back to the colours of the main title.
