further RESEARCH into music photographers – 25/11/2020
On November 25, 2020 by Sophie MartynFor my International Baccalaureate, I chose to do research into a music photographer which took a photo recently which sparked a lot of criticism with a lot of people.
[1] Tyler Mitchell (American, b. 1995) is a photographer and filmmaker based in Brooklyn, working across many genres to explore and document a new aesthetic of Blackness. Mitchell is regularly published in avant-garde magazines, commissioned by prominent fashion houses, and exhibited in top tier institutions. In 2018 he made history as the first Black photographer to shoot a cover of American Vogue for Beyoncé’s appearance in the September issue. This, alongside many other accomplishments, has established Mitchell as one of the most closely watched up-and-coming talents in image making today. His first solo exhibition ‘I Can Make You Feel Good’ at Foam Fotografiemuseum Amsterdam (2019) premiered video works including ‘Idyllic Space.’
Tyler Mitchell took a photo of the artist Harry Styles for the cover of Vogue. Not only did harry become the first solo male artist to be on the cover of vogue but was also weaned a blue dress. This sparked a huge outrage across the world with people saying quote “bring back manly men”. This comment sparked the outrage in the LGBTQ+ community because from this photo a lot of people who were scared to wear dresses mainly men became more confident because Harry decided to break the Gender difference in the fashion industry. A lot of people were offended by Harry wearing a dress because traditionally only women wear dresses. Harry said in his interview part of being in vogue “I find myself looking at women’s clothes, thinking they’re amazing,”. Harry doesn’t care about what he wears along as it makes him happy. Clothes are there to have fun with and experiment with and play with,” and “What’s really exciting is that all of these lines are just kind of crumbling away.” are some more things Harry said in the interview.
When Harry talks about the lines, he is talking about the gender differences fading/ crumbling away.
Here are some pictures from the Vogue shoot –
